Answers for March "Fun with Math"

Five kids answered all March questions correctly

Five of the entrants in the March "Fun with Math" game that was based on the "pick up sticks" format got all answers correct.

Getting the answers hinged on being able to identify the "math traps" that Francis knew about and Eddy didn't.

The five with all correct answers were Tori Harbison of Glen Carbon, IL; Dani Kirsch of Edwardsville, IL; Wes Schoenthal of Edwardsville, IL; Chad Turner of Glen Carbon, IL, and Ryan Wahidi of Creve Coeur, MO.

Since Wes Schoenthal and Chad Turner haven't been winners recently, Young Saint Louis.com awarded them the $10 Border's gift certificates this month.

Solution for the April, 2010, "Fun with Math" questions

  1. No matter how many sticks Eddy takes away, Francis always can take away the last stick on his turn. 6 is a losing number. Francis will win.

  2. Since 6 is a losing number, Eddy wants to avoid being left with 6 sticks in the pile. However, no matter how many sticks Eddy takes away, Francis has a move to leave Eddy with 6 sticks. 12 is a losing number. Francis will win.

  3. Since 12 is a losing number, Eddy wants to avoid being left with 12 sticks in the pile. However, no matter how many sticks Eddy takes away, Francis has a move to leave Eddy with 12 sticks. 18 is a losing number. Francis will win.

  4. All multiples of 6 are losing numbers. 48 is a losing number. Eddy should take away 4 sticks (52-48=4).
