Places to Go, Things to Do

Trailnet's 2010 Bike rides and more

Hopefully, the snow is gone for good and spring is in the air. That means it's time for planning local bike or hiking trips and also thinking of other ways to get outdoors.

One neat planning guide is Trailnet's 2010 Calendar of Rides. It is a complete guide to a host of rides throughout the metro area.

And, in recent years, the group has included a list of hiking events, often on the same routes as the bike rides.

The guides can be picked up for free at your neighborhood bike shop and visit the Trailnet website at www.trailnet.org.

With the start of spring, there are lots of other outdoor activities. They include:

  • The opening of the 2010 St. Louis Cardinal baseball season.
  • The GO! St. Louis Marathon and Family Fitness weekend.
  • Wetlands for Kids at Busch Conservation Area.
  • World War II Weekend at Jefferson Barracks.
  • Schnuck Children's Garden opens at Botanical Gardens.
  • Atlatl competition at Cahokia Mounds.

(Also, this edition of YSL.com includes a couple front page stories about other events in April. They are the St. Louis Storytelling Festival and the St. Louis Earth Day. Be sure to read those stories for details.)

Trailnet 2010 Calendar of Rides

The 2010 Trailnet ride calendar starts with the Dog Prairie bicycle ride on Sunday, April 11, and ends in October with the Ride the Rivers Century. That final ride is 100 miles.

But, Trailnet has a special Bicycle Fun Club which promotes rides on low-traffic roads with less challenging terrain and shorter distances. And, many of these rides are tied to food stops or local festivals.

A couple of the food-stop rides are the Berry Bicycle Ride and Strawberry Festival in May and the I Scream for Ice Cream Ride in August.

Trailnet also offers individual trail maps and SAG (support and gear) assistance.

Many of the rides are in daylight hours and on weekends. But, there is also a special listing of weekday and night rides.

Another feature of the 2010 calendar is a list of internet links to other sites with additional biking opportunities. One good resource is the website of the Great River Greenway at www.greatrivers.info.

To pick up the 2010 Ride Guide, check at your neighborhood bike shop or visit the www.Trailnet.org website.
