Your Turn

Suggested lesson plan for
"Kid joins old-time model train club"

Possible hard words:

Proper names: Jake Pfeiffer, Webster Groves High School, Kenneth Rimmel, Tim Miller, Daniel Kiefel, Oak Brook Elementary School, Ballwin, Chattanooga, Tenn., Amtrak

Other words: elaborate, perspective, depot, architect, caboose,

BEFORE READING: Have the young reader read the list of possible hard words. Provide help where needed, but keep track of the number of times help is needed. If no more than three items require your help, ask the young reader to read the article silently. If four to six require help, ask the child to read the article aloud to you. If seven or more require assistance, you offer to read the article aloud. In all three instances, point out questions will be raised over the article.

DURING READING: For the silent reader, offer to help out with words if asked for help. For the one reading aloud, supply troublesome words fairly promptly in order to keep the reading fluent. If you read aloud, model fluent oral reading.

AFTER READING: Use questions such as those that follow in order to assess understanding and promote discussion of the article.

  1. How did the Big Bend Railroad Club get started?
  2. Why are the older members excited about the junior members of the club?
  3. What is the purpose of the club?
  4. Would you have any interest in being part of a model railroad club or some similar club? Why or why not?
