Suggested lesson plan for
"Community service helps Grace Dearing win"

Possible hard words:

Proper names: Grace Anne Dearing, McKinley CGA School, Grace United Methodist Church, Kennett, Mo., Wilmore Park, Junkique, Yum Yum, Mikado

Other words: accomplishments, projects, proceeds, newborns, toiletries

BEFORE READING: Have the young reader read the list of possible hard words. Help out with pronunciations as needed, but keep track of how many items require your assistance. If no more than three require help, have the child read the article silently. If four to six require help, have the child read the article aloud to you. If seven or more items are problems, you offer to read the article aloud. In all three instances, point out that questions will be raised after the reading.

DURING READING: For the child reading silently, simply offer to help out with any words or names if asked for help. For the one reading aloud, supply fairly promptly any words that seem to be impairing reading fluency. If you read aloud, model fluent oral reading.

AFTER READING: Use questions such as the following to check comprehension and stimulate discussion of the article.

  1. What are some examples of service projects that Grace has been involved in?
  2. What two words do you think "junkique" is based on?
  3. What is involved in "Locks of Love"?
  4. Do you or would you like to participate in any kinds of service projects? Why or why not?
