An update Wheelchair athlete
has picked
Last month, Young Saint Louis.com profiled Dana Meyer. She’s the girl who was paralyzed while a middle-schooler but came back strong to become an international wheelchair athlete. Dana is in her last year at Lutheran South High School. Like other seniors, she’s been spending a lot of time trying to find the right college. When we interviewed her for the website article, Dana was looking at a number of colleges that had wheelchair athletic programs. After a personal visit, she’s decided to attend Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. The school isn’t well-known in the Midwest. But, for Dana, it looks like a good choice. The magazine, U.S. News and World Report, picked Samford seventh among Southern regional colleges in its 1999 America’s Best Colleges listing. It’s also a small college. That fits Dana, who went to small Lutheran schools in St. Louis. Also, Samford has a pharmacy school. That’s one of Dana’s career choices. Another valuable asset is nearby Lakeshore Foundation. The foundation specializes in training wheelchair athletes. Dana’s father said foundation officials see her as having Para-Olympic Games potential. For a look at Lakeshore Foundation’s program, you can log on at www.lakeshore.org. For a complete story about Dana, click on to our archives on the home page and call up the January, 2001, edition. Dana was featured in the Profile section. |
