Three winners in Math Mania cartooning

The January Math Mania cartooning competition entries answered one problem: there are ways to mix math humor with editorial cartooning.

There weren't as many entries in January for cartooning as for the December contest that featured the more familiar number problems.

But, Young Saint Louis.com judges did find three entries that warranted the award of $10 Borders gift certificates. Under Math Mania rules, up to three certificates are awarded each month.

The YSL.com judges acknowledge that artistic awards are subjective but the awards are final. The judges were pleased with the overall quality of the entries.

According to the contest rules, artistic ability wasn't to be a factor in the awards.

Rather, creativity and originality were the prime factors. And, the cartoons could be either in black-and-white or color. A maximum of 5 panels was the most allowed for any one entry.

The winners were Tess Johnson, 13, of St. Louis; Erin McCann, 14, of St. Louis, and Brigid Mattingly, 13, of St. Louis.

(A reminder: The February Math Mania returns to the more familiar number problems. To enter the February contest, click here.)

Here are reproductions of the three winning cartoons.

"Wow, she can't draw or spell and yet she got her Ph.D. Anyway, I thought this was math class? I must have went to home-ec instead. I hate the first days of school.
