Fourteen-year-old Mary Thomas wants a career in film and video editing. She said she's changed her choice of high schools in order to better shape her future education toward that goal.

Movie making
Winning movie helps teach character
Two kid movie-making teams at Willow Brook Elementary School have won firsts in the 2006 Show Me A Movie competition. One of the movies already has been used in explaining the school's character-building program to students.

Eight schools have winning movie teams
Twelve teams from eight different schools had winning teams in the 2006 Show Me A Movie competition sponsored by the Cooperating School Districts organization. Four schools had two winners apiece.

Minority scientists
90-year-old tells kids joys of science
Dr. Lincoln I. Diuguid is a scientist who turned 90 this month. But, he continues to work at his laboratory and manufacturing plant in St. Louis.

Kids study stream erosion in high-speed

Eighth grade kids from Maplewood/Richmond Heights Middle School have been studying the watershed of nearby Deer Creek. Last month, they got to simulate at high speed the erosion potential of the stream.

Books reviewed for February include accounts of (1) a stray dog's life, (2) a girl who learns to be supportive in her best friend's grief, (3) kids trying to survive in a tsunami, and (4) two girls who help free the ghost of a young girl from continuing to haunt the house in which she died.

Read, Right, Run
Big Dewey Elementary turnout for RRR
Eight-year-old Tayler Kuper credits the Read, Right and Run program with getting her "up and going" when it came to physical exercise. She admits she previously had been a bit of a "couch potato."

Help the birds
Birds need new food supplies in wintertime
Although we haven't had much snow so far this winter, February is a time when wild birds could use some help with new food supplies. St. Louis area kids can provide assistance right in their backyards.

Kids have fun, success in hockey
Most kids of the St. Peters Spirit Mite AA hockey team say their tourney win in a Thanksgiving meet in Chicago was their best hockey experience so far.

Math Mania
Math Mania in February has "magic squares"
Ms. Math Mania has yet another new format for the February Math Mania puzzles. These are in the form of "magic squares."

Quite a few MM winners in January
There weren't quite as many Math Mania winners in January as there were in December. But, you made a very respectable showing for this first try at Sudoku puzzles.
