February's "Fun with Math"

Square numbers hold key to this month's puzzles

Puzzle author George Yu has focused the February "Fun with Math" puzzles on square numbers. Have a try at this new Young Saint Louis.com math contest.

Some of these answers may require some trial and error. But, that's all right. Not all answers to math questions come in a clear formula.

After all, some answers to life's most complicated questions started with an observation or educated guess. Then, the formula came out of a person's quest to prove his or her first guess.

(To review the January contest and learn the winners and the answers, click here.)

The monthly "Fun with Math" contests follow the same rules YSL.com has followed for several years. They are:

  1. Print out the following entry form.
  2. Fill out your name, address and telephone number. (Print clearly please)
  3. Include the name of your school and math teacher.
  4. Answer the puzzle questions for February.
  5. Put your completed entry into a stamped, addressed envelope.
  6. Be sure to print the entry form so we can be sure of spelling.
  7. Mail the entry to:

February Fun with Math Contest Challenge:
Square Numbers

  1. Square numbers are the product of a number and itself. 9, 36, and 64 are all square numbers. 9=3x3. 36=6x6. 64=8x8. What are the two square numbers greater than 150 and less than 200?

  2. Bob and Carl are not adults (they are less than 18 years old). Both of their ages are square numbers. The sum of their ages is also a square number. Bob is older than Carl. How old are they?

  3. Diana bought a notebook with less than 100 pages. She ripped out 32 pages. The number of pages remaining was a perfect square. She ripped out 32 pages again. The number of pages remaining was still a perfect square. How many pages were originally in her notebook?
