January contest

Challenge 24 for January Math Mania

The January Math Mania puzzles return to a familiar format as we start the 2009 year. You'll arrange the four numbers with appropriate math functions to achieve the common answer of 24.

Ms. Math Mania is Ms. Amy Ruzicka, who's been creating the Math Mania contest for the last few years. If you've entered previously, you know she likes to use a variety of puzzle formats to entertain you.

For January, she has six questions with sets of four numbers in each one.

Your job is to use symbols for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and parentheses between the numbers to make the answers that each total 24.

The rules for entry into Math Mania remain the same. Competition is open to St. Louis area kids 8 through 13.

If you get all the answers correct, you are eligible to win a $10 Border's gift certificate.

Be sure to follow the rules below, especially the one that requires entries to be postmarked by the 15th of January. You might have to hurry a little, since the holiday break won't be over until after New Year's Day.

How to enter:

  1. Print out the following entry form.
  2. Fill out your name, address and telephone number. (Print clearly please)
  3. Include the name of your school and math teacher.
  4. Answer the questions for January.
  5. Put your completed entry into a stamped, addressed envelope.
  6. Be sure to print the entry form so we can be sure of spelling.
