Suggested lesson plan for
"Three sisters win play roles for 1st time"

Possible hard words:

Proper names: Caroline, Annemarie, Olivia Daiker, Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat, Penelope, Russian, Diane, Stephan, Alladin, Jr., Seussical the Musical, Visitation Academy

Other words: promotions, auditions, guitarist, remembrances, hiccups

BEFORE READING: Have the young reader read the list of possible hard words. Provide help with pronunciations, but keep track of how many items require your help. If no more than three are problems, have the child read the article silently. If four to six are problems, ask the child to read the article aloud to you. If seven or more are problems, you volunteer to read the article aloud. In each of these examples, point out questions will be asked after the reading.

DURING READING: For the silent reader, just offer to supply troublesome words if asked to help. For the one reading aloud, supply troublesome words promptly in order to keep the reading fluent. If you read aloud, model smooth, fluent oral reading.

AFTER READING: Use questions such as the following to check comprehension and stimulate discussion of the article.

  1. What was a first for the three sisters?
  2. What kind of performers are the girls' parents?
  3. What were the girls' worst memories about performances they were in?
  4. Would you like to perform on stage like the three girls? Why or why not?
