Scholastic has published a new series called Heartland with a teen-age heroine named Amy Fleming.  Amy lives on her family-owned farm in Virginia that is dedicated to retraining horses that have been mistreated or that for other reasons appear to be not trainable. Amy experiences some losses of those closest to her, so in many ways, she has to relearn to trust and to get along with other people. She does have great sensitivity in dealing with horses that others do not seem able to reach.  The stories show how Amy heals her own hurts and copes with her own troubles in growing up as she helps a variety of troubled ponies and horses. 

The first two books in the four volume series are titled Coming Home and After the Storm.  The third book of the series is scheduled to be out in September of 2000.  The author is Lauren Brooke and the price at your local bookstore is $4.50 for each paperback.
