March's Math Mania mixes numbers,
letters
To
find the answers to the March Math Mania problems,
you'll need to figure the relationships of simple numbers
to the first letters of words.
MM creator Amy Ruzicka tries to bring variety
to her math problems. She has traditional puzzlers with lots
of number figuring. Then, she's used essay and artwork competitions
with math themes.
This month, she's brought in a type of math problem that
doesn't involve much figuring. But, it does ask you to think
about the relationships of a number to words. Except, she
only gives the first letter of the words.
Here are a couple of examples:
12 = I in F (Answer: 12 equals
Inches in a Foot)
60 = S in M (Answer: 60 equals
Seconds in a Minute)
In February, Ms. Ruzicka went back to the more traditional
math puzzles. These involved figuring and computations.

As you know from past contests, Ms. Ruzicka teaches math
at St. Gabriel's School in south St. Louis City. In addition
to the traditional math lessons, she gives each of her classes
brainteasers, which usually has some fun included.
Her Math Mania puzzles have the same feel as
her extra-credit ones.
The entry process for the March Math Mania
is the same as previous months.
There will be up to three $10 Borders gift certificates awarded
to kids who answer all of the number problems correctly.
