Understanding Your Dog's Language

DogspeakSometimes there are books like this one written for grown-ups that just have to be shared with kids. Or, possibly, kids who are good readers might want to read it first and then share it with their dad or mom. One of these is Dogspeak, with the subtitle How to Understand Your Dog and Help Him Understand You. The colorful paperback is a recent addition to a series called "Dog Care Companions."

The series is aimed at pet lovers and talks about your dog's behavior, health care, training, and communication.  Of course, Dogspeak is the one about communication.  It tells about how to talk to your dog, how dogs talk to other dogs, and how dogs talk to people. It explains what different barks mean and how dogs and people talk to each other through their body language.  In its later chapters it tells how to use your voice, hand signals, and treats to train your dog to be a good friend and companion.

Beautiful pictures of many different breeds of dogs are used to illustrate the points made in the book.  This 1999 publication is from Rodale Press, Inc. and distributed by St. Martin's Press.  The paperback version is $14.95 in bookstores.
