Homemade posters promote kids' performance
Third graders at Cedar Springs Elementary School in Jefferson County created homemade posters to hype the upcoming 26th annual St. Louis Storytelling Festival. The artwork targeted especially kids' storytelling efforts.

Gateway Young Achievers for 2006
A dozen St. Louis metro area youngsters have been selected as 2006 Gateway Young Achievers of the Year. The awards go to elementary, middle and senior high kids who demonstrate accomplishments in school as well as service and artistic efforts.

Kids propose 3-city merger plan
Kids in three Pattonville School District schools have a plan to merge the cities of Bridgeton, St. Ann and Maryland Heights. They even have a name for the new city-St. Bridgeton Heights.

Kids enjoy first time in Muny Kids
Thirteen-year-old Emily Woods of Belleville, Ill., said her mother called her at school to tell her she'd been selected for the Muny Kids troupe. "I jumped up and down right in the school office," the 7th grader said.

Safe after-school program in East St. Louis
Thirteen-year-old Cornelius Brown uses much of his after-school time at Clark Middle School for research on class projects. But, he also likes the recreational activities-especially basketball.

This month's book reviews

May book reviews include ones about a boy who tries to help his Japanese friend early in World War II, a skinny kid who can't play baseball, a slave girl in Georgia at the end of the Civil War, and an eleven-year-old who tries to hold her family together.

City Summer Reading
Magic House visits featured this summer
The St. Louis Public Library's summer reading program will include bus trips to "Family Nights at the Magic House." There are also incentives to encourage city kids to read throughout the summer.

County Summer Reading
Kids theme: "Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales"
The St. Louis County Library kicks off its incentive-rich kids' summer reading program on Saturday, June 3, with three area parties. The program theme is "Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales."

State Chess
Chess co-champs share similarities
Nine-year-olds Kevin Cao and William Tong recently were named co-champions in the 5th grade and under division of the Missouri State championships. Their lives also have other similarities.

Lewis and Clark
Learning value of primary research sources
Two hundred years ago, President Jefferson asked Lewis and Clark to investigate lands of the Louisiana Purchase northwest of St. Louis. The president stressed he wanted them to bring back real examples of what they found.

Math Mania
1. A guest-written Math Mania for May
Math Mania creator Amy Ruzicka is taking advanced courses at Webster University, in addition to teaching grade school math. For the May Math Mania, she asked one of her college math professors to write a guest feature.

2. Kids plan new Olympic events around math
Some of you were able to "invent" some unique World Olympics math-based events as proposed in the April Math Mania. But, whether any of them will be sanctioned as official events anytime soon is questionable.
