County Summer Reading

Kids theme: "Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales"

The St. Louis County Library kicks off its incentive-rich kids' summer reading program on Saturday, June 3, with three area parties. The program theme is "Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales."

The county program also features a mixture of fun events at its branches and individual incentives to encourage kids to read throughout the summer. Among the incentives will be chances to win Cardinal baseball tickets.

The three area parties for kids up to 12 years of age are at:

  • North County Recreation Complex at 2577 Redman Ave. Performers include The Frilly and Miller Show, It's Randy Erwin, Africa Alive and the S&S Farms Exotic Petting Zoo.
  • Suson Park at 6073 Wells Road in south county. Performers include Cat's Meow, Storytelling to Crow About, Babaloo Music and Fun and the Swashbucklers and Scalawags Pirate Show.
  • Faust Park at 15185 Olive Blvd. in west county. Performers are The Totally Magic Show, starring Christian the Magician, Juggling Jeff, The Magic of Paws, Claws and Fish Tales and S&S Farms Exotic Petting Zoo.

Hours for the area parties are from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There are also refreshments.

The area parties are geared primary to the Kids' division, for kids up 12 years of age.

However, there is a separate incentive program for those in the Teen Division (12-17).

For the Kids Division, the incentives are divided into three levels, all figured in minutes of reading. The first level is for 280 minutes of reading; 2nd level, 700 minutes and 3rd level, l,300 minutes.

All kids who reach the 700-minute level have their names entered in a drawing for baseball tickets for a Cardinal game in the new ballpark downtown.

Kids who reach the 1,300-minute level also get tickets for an Ending Party at their local branches.

Teen Division reading levels and incentives are different, but they also include a chance for Cardinal tickets.

After the kickoff events, the individual branches have events scheduled throughout the summer. Many of the performers at the kickoff parties have been scheduled at individual branches.

You can plan to attend by picking up a schedule at your branch or by checking the library's website at www.slcl.org.
