Suggested lesson plan for
"Kids create research tool for SLPL"

Possible hard words:

Proper names: Carrie Dietz, Wikipedia, Rachel Newlin, Carr-Lane VPA Middle School, Deonta Irvin, Langston Middle School, W.E.B. Dubois, Robert Powell, Jan Greenberg, Daniel Carter, Chinyere E. Oteh

Other words: underwriting, credibility, resumes, databases, composition

BEFORE READING: Have the young reader read the list of possible hard words. Provide help as needed, but keep track of how many items require your assistance. If no more than three are problems, ask the young reader to read the article silently. If four to six are problems, have him or her read the article aloud to you. If seven or more are problems, you volunteer to read the article aloud. In all three instances point out questions will be raised after the reading.

DURING READING: For the silent reader, simply offer to help with any words if asked for help. For the one reading aloud, supply troublesome words fairly promptly. If you read aloud, model fluent oral reading.

AFTER READING: Use questions such as the following to asses comprehension and stimulate discussion of the article.

  1. What doe the Hawaiian word "wiki" stand for and how does it apply to the MyTracswiki project?
  2. Describe when and how the kids work on the project?
  3. What were some of the "extras" that kids reported they gained from working on the project?
  4. Would you have any interest in participating in such a project? Why or why not?
