Suggested lesson plan for
"For Sperring Middle, "team" is the word"

Possible hard words:

Proper names: Rick Nelson, Sperring Middle, M. J. Mohr, William Bernard, Vidhan Srivastava, Ben Harris, Jordan Watt, William Spaeth, St. Catherine Laboure, Luke Borkowsk

Other words: cumulative, concentrate, anticipate, tactics, strategy, percussionist

BEFORE READING: Have the young reader read the list of possible hard words. Provide help as needed, but keep count of the number of items requiring your assistance. If no more than three are troublesome, have the child read the article silently. If four to six items require help, ask the child to read the article aloud to you. If seven or more items require your help, you read the article aloud. In all instances, note that questions will be raised after the reading.

DURING READING: For the silent reader, simply offer to help with words if asked. For the one reading aloud, provide words fairly promptly that appear to be interfering with fluent reading. If you read aloud, model fluent oral reading.

AFTER READING: Use questions to check understanding and promote discussion of the article. Examples follow..

  1. Why did the coach stress the "team" aspect of tournament competition?
  2. Who did nearly all of the kids start playing chess with in the beginning?
  3. Why is it not a good idea to always use the same strategy in playing the game?
  4. Do you have any interest in playing chess? Why or why not?
