Questions for May "Fun with Math"

How much time for a variety of trips

The "Fun with Math" questions for May involve people taking trips using various modes of transportation. Then there's a crazy bird tracking the travelers in one of the puzzles.

"Fun with Math" author George Yu wants you to find the relationships between the travelers' times and their type of transport. Also the times for the crazy bird.

The calculations need to be exact because in some cases the travelers want to meet up at different places.

In some ways, the relationships between speeds of travel are similar to the relationships between the painters in the April puzzles. (To review the April results, just click here.)

The monthly "Fun with Math" contests follow the same rules YSL.com has followed for several years. They are:

  1. Print out the following entry form.

May Fun with Math Contest Challenge:

New York is 1,000 miles from St. Louis.

  1. Ida drives from St. Louis to New York at 50 miles per hour. How long will the trip take her? James flies an airplane from New York to St. Louis at 200 miles per hour. How long will the trip take him?

  2. Ida and James are meeting partway between St. Louis and New York. Ida leaves St. Louis at noon. James leaves New York at 5 p.m. What time will they meet? How far from St. Louis will they meet?

  3. Ida and James are meeting again. Ida leaves St. Louis and James leaves New York. Both of them leave at noon. A St. Louis bird also flies toward New York at noon at 220 miles per hour. When the bird meets James, it flies back toward Ida. When the bird meets Ida, it flies back toward James. The bird continues moving back and forth until Ida and James meet. How far did the bird travel? (Hint: How long was the bird flying and how fast was it going.)
