October "Fun with Math" answers
Eleven winners in first "Fun with Math"
"Fun with Math" creator George Yu might have underestimated
the math prowess of the Young Saint Louis.com readers.
Eleven kids who entered the first math competition of the
2009-10 school year got all the answers correct.
Ordinarily, YSL.com awards two $10 Borders gift certificates
when there are just a few winners. But, with 11 kids getting
all of the answers correct, we've decided to award three certificates.
The certificate winners, who were chosen at random from among
the 11 all-correct entries, are:
Elliot Ambort of St. Louis, Jane Gillette of
Clayton and Olivia Smith of St. Louis.
The eight other kids who got the correct answers were:
Timothy Bailey of Clayton, Matthew De Lapaz
of St. Louis, Eric Graham of Clayton, Mark Hoagland
of Clayton, Durga Kullakanda of Maryland Heights, Lemuel
Lan of Clayton, Bob Qian of Clayton and Ryan
Wahidi of Creve Coeur.
As we mentioned in the writeup of the October puzzles, it
will be useful later in the year if you keep a copy of this
puzzle. That's because George Yu is going to have a similar
puzzle later in the year and he promises it will be much tougher
than the October one.

Here's George's explanation for the October puzzles:
Solution for October's Fun
with Math
1. There are 4 squares in every column
and 3 squares in every row.
4 (5) = 20 1x1 squares
2.

Each of the red squares is the center
of a different 2x2 square. There are 3 red squares in every
column and 4 red squares in every row.
3 (4) = 12 2x2 squares

Each of the red squares is the center
of a different 3x3 square.
2 (3) = 6 3x3 squares

Each of the red squares is the center
of a different 4x4 square.
1 (2) = 2 4x4 squares
20 + 12 + 6 + 2 = 40 squares of any size
