special review for October is Christopher Paolini's
"Eldest," a sequel to "Eragon." Other reviews
include one about kids in Brooklyn during World
War II, an Italian grandmother who helps kids
with their problems, and a shipwrecked boy who
lives with sheepdogs on a deserted island.

Books
City
libraries to start free book plan
The St. Louis Public Library this
month will start a new program to help kids
develop a joy for reading books. The central
library and its 14 city branches will start
by passing out 300 free books that kids don't
have to return.

kicks off after-school activities website
An October 20 kickoff rally will launch a
new area-wide website to help kids find interesting
after-school activities. The rally will be
at the St. Louis Science Center.

Cavanugh and Collin Overby usually get a ride
to and from school. But, on Friday, Oct. 7,
school buses for Fairway Elementary School
will be pretty empty.
