This month's book reviews
The special review for October is Christopher Paolini's "Eldest," a sequel to "Eragon." Other reviews include one about kids in Brooklyn during World War II, an Italian grandmother who helps kids with their problems, and a shipwrecked boy who lives with sheepdogs on a deserted island.

Free Books
City libraries to start free book plan

The St. Louis Public Library this month will start a new program to help kids develop a joy for reading books. The central library and its 14 city branches will start by passing out 300 free books that kids don't have to return.

After School Fun
Rally kicks off after-school activities website

An October 20 kickoff rally will launch a new area-wide website to help kids find interesting after-school activities. The rally will be at the St. Louis Science Center.

Walk to School
Walking to school can be good exercise

Elementary students Emily Buatois, Margaret Cavanugh and Collin Overby usually get a ride to and from school. But, on Friday, Oct. 7, school buses for Fairway Elementary School will be pretty empty.

Thirteen-year-old Tyler Pickett got back into sports this year after a 1½ year layoff. This summer, he was in a national track and field meet. And now he's taking up basketball for the first time.

The figuring you'll need for the October Math Mania questions won't be too hard. But, be sure you understand the wording of the questions fully before you try to solve the problems.

2. Five winners for first Math Mania contest
Math Mania started in September and our readers got off to a good start. Five kids who submitted entries gave correct answers for all six of the Mania problems.
