September questions

Nutty Brain Teasers lead off 2008-09

The first Math Mania puzzles start off with just two word questions. But, they are a little tricky and you'll have to be on your toes to get them right.

The creator of Math Mania for the 2008-09 school year is the same as last year, Ms. Amy Ruzicka.

And the purpose of Math Mania is also the same. Ms. Ruzicka and Young Saint Louis.com want to give you a chance to have fun with math without the pressure of earning a classroom grade.

But, YSL.com wants to include an element of competition and a chance of winning a prize. In this case, a $10 Borders book certificate.

If a kid gets all the answers correct, he or she has a chance to win a certificate. We'll give away up to three $10 certificates each month. If more than three kids get all the answers correct, we'll have a random drawing to pick the three winners.

And this year, we're including a little incentive for your math teacher. For all teachers who have students entered in the monthly contest, we'll have a drawing so the teachers get a chance to win a book certificate.

A teacher can win a certificate even if none of his or her students gets all of the answers correct. The teacher gets a chance to win merely by having the students enter.

The rules for entering Math Mania are the same as last year. The competition is open to kids 8 through 13 in the metro St. Louis area. An entry blank and the September questions are printed below.

Be sure to follow the rules, especially about filling out the entry blank clearly (printing is best) and get the entry postmarked by the 15th of the month.

In October, we'll have a new set of questions and will publish the September answers along with the names of any winners.

How to enter:

  1. Print out the following entry form.
  2. Fill out your name, address and telephone number. (Print, please)
  3. Include the name of your school and math teacher.
  4. Answer the questions for September.
  5. Put your completed entry into a stamped, addressed envelope.
  6. Be sure to print the entry form so we can be sure of spelling.
  7. Mail the entry to:

September Math Mania Challenge: Nutty Brain Teasers

1. GRANDMA AND TROLLS

You are on your way to visit your Grandma, who lives at the end of the valley. It's her birthday, and you want to give her the cakes you've made.

Between your house and her house, you have to cross 7 bridges, and as it goes in the land of make believe, there is a troll under every bridge! Each troll, quite rightly, insists that you pay a troll toll. Before you can cross their bridge, you have to give them half of the cakes you are carrying, but as they are kind trolls, they each give you back a single cake.

How many cakes do you have to leave home with to make sure that you arrive at Grandma's with exactly 2 cakes?

Answer: ___________________

2. A BIT NUTTY

A shop sells king-size Payday bars at $1 each. Each of these Payday bars is wrapped in a special wrapper. You can trade 3 of these wrappers for 1 Payday bar. If you have $15, how many Payday bars can you get altogether?
