October contest
A logic puzzle for this month's Math Mania
The
Math Mania puzzle questions for October involve
matching up people with a bunch of their characteristics.
And there's a grid to help you keep track of the clues and
figure out who's who.
Math teacher Amy Ruzicka is Ms. Math Mania.
She will be posing the Math Mania questions
for all of the 2008-09 school year.
The Math Mania started last month and eight
kids who entered got all the correct answers. Three of the
kids won a $10 Border's gift certificate after a random drawing.
In addition, Young Saint Louis.com also awarded
a $10 certificate to one of the math teachers whose kids entered
the September competition. This is a new feature of Math
Mania.
In the October Grid Logic Puzzle, the best way to
figure the answers will be to link each clue to one of the
five kids. After you find a home for the clues, the correct
answers will become more obvious.
The rules for Math Mania are the same as those
last year. Competition is open to kids 8 through 13 in the
metro St. Louis area. An entry blank and the October puzzle
are attached below.
Be sure to follow the rules, especially the one regarding
the postmark for each entry. The entries need to be postmarked
by the 15th of the month in order to be considered for a prize.
In November, we'll publish the names of the winners along
with the answers to the October puzzle. (To check out the

October Math Mania Challenge:
Grid Logic Puzzle
Use the provided clues and your own reasoning
skills to find out where each person lives, his/her hobby, and
his/her most intriguing natural disaster. You may find it helpful
to use the provided grid.
BFF's?
Dennis, Emily, Katrina, Rita, and
Wilma are five friends who went to elementary school together.
However, in 6th grade, each of them moved to a different state
or country and are now starting to forget where each person
is living, what water sport each person likes, and which natural
disaster fascinates each of them. Can you help them sort out
their homes and hobbies?
Friends: Dennis, Emily, Katrina, Rita,
Wilma
Locations: Mexico, Texas, Cuba, Alabama,
Florida
Hobbies: Waterskiing, Scuba Diving, Surfing,
Kayaking, Swimming
Natural Disasters: Avalanches, Hurricanes,
Tornadoes, Earthquakes, Tsunamis
-
The five friends are Emily,
the waterskier, the hurricane and avalanche fanatics, and
the Texan.
-
If Dennis is the Cuban, then
Emily is the Mexican. If Dennis is the hurricane lover, then
Rita loves avalanches. One of these statements is true.
-
Katrina and Dennis are the
waterskier and the hurricane fanatic.
-
The waterskier, surfer, and
scuba diver live in Mexico, Cuba, and Texas and are fascinated
by tornadoes, tsunamis, and earthquakes.
-
The Floridian, who is not
Katrina, likes kayaking and avalanches.
-
The surfer, the diver, and
Dennis used to hang out with Wilma afterschool.
-
Emily loves earthquakes and
Rita loves tsunamis.
-
Rita has known the surfer
since first grade.
