34 got all Math Mania answers

A total of 34 kids identified correctly all characteristics of the five friends during the October Math Mania contest. Either you guys are really smart or Ms. Math Mania was taking it easy on you.

I guess we'll find out when you try to answer the Math Mania questions for November. (To go to the November contest, just click here.)

The kids who got all of the October questions correct were:

Zack Bayley, Rachel Bluestone, Katherine Ben, Zoe Bowman, Nick Brax, Sky Churani, Alaina Curran, Dena Dianati, Ryan Deiring, Neil Douherty, Brittney Dunworth, Noah Engel, Malayka Ferhi, Stephanie Getz, Lilian Heil, Steve Hillis, Jay (no last name), Eliot Loong, Quincy Mack, Mary McGuire, Audrey Palmer, Leah Paster, Maria Ryan, Miranda Reese, Miranda Rubin, Peter Schmidt, Victoria Strumple, Veit Ulrich, Petro V, Ryan Wahidi, Katie Warnusz-Steckel, Justin Weisman, Dustion Wood and Kayla Wood.

Four of the kids also got all of the September answers correct. They were Steve Hillis, Miranda Reese, Veit Ulrich and Kayla Wood.

Usually, Young Saint Louis.com gives three Borders gift certificates to the winners. But, because of the high number of winners this time, we're going to give five $10 certificates, with the winners selected in a random drawing.

The certificate winners for October were Zoe Bowman, Neil Douherty, Malayka Ferhi, Audrey Palmer and Justin Weisman.

In addition, in a new addition to the prizes, YSL.com is awarding a $10 gift certificate each month to one of the math teachers whose kids have entered. This award is for getting the kids to enter and doesn't depend on whether any of his or her students win.

The October winning teacher is Ms. Suellen Slais at Wydown Middle School.

Here are the answers to the October Math Mania puzzles:

October Math Mania SOLUTIONS

Use the provided clues and your own reasoning skills to find out where each person lives, his/her hobby, and his/her most intriguing natural disaster. You may find it helpful to use the provided grid.

BFF's?

Dennis, Emily, Katrina, Rita, and Wilma are five friends who went to elementary school together. However, in 6th grade, each of them moved to a different state or country and are now starting to forget where each person is living, what water sport each person likes, and which natural disaster fascinates each of them. Can you help them sort out their homes and hobbies?

Friends: Dennis, Emily, Katrina, Rita, Wilma
Locations: Mexico, Texas, Cuba, Alabama, Florida
Hobbies: Waterskiing, Scuba Diving, Surfing, Kayaking, Swimming
Natural Disasters: Avalanches, Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Earthquakes, Tsunamis

  1. The five friends are Emily, the waterskier, the hurricane and avalanche fanatics, and the Texan.

  2. If Dennis is the Cuban, then Emily is the Mexican. If Dennis is the hurricane lover, then Rita loves avalanches. One of these statements is true.

  3. Katrina and Dennis are the waterskier and the hurricane fanatic.

  4. The waterskier, surfer, and scuba diver live in Mexico, Cuba, and Texas and are fascinated by tornadoes, tsunamis, and earthquakes.

  5. The Floridian, who is not Katrina, likes kayaking and avalanches.

  6. The surfer, the diver, and Dennis used to hang out with Wilma afterschool.

  7. Emily loves earthquakes and Rita loves tsunamis.

  8. Rita has known the surfer since first grade.

Answers:

Dennis lives in Cuba, waterskies, and loves tornadoes. Emily lives in Mexico, surfs, and loves earthquakes. Katrina lives in Alabama, swims, and loves hurricanes. Rita lives in Texas, scuba dives, and loves tsunamis. Wilma lives in Florida, kayaks, and loves avalanches.
